- On Thursday Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced the government will table a unanimous resolution in the 60-member Assembly to oppose and ban uranium mining in Meghalaya.
- Union Minister Jitendra Singh has said the Centre is still "examining" the issue and would first frame rules under a proposed national nuclear-energy law, leaving legal openings the state wants closed.
- The Khasi Students’ Union welcomed the Assembly move but called it insufficient and demanded binding steps such as autonomous district councils amending land laws to block sale of uranium-bearing land.
- KSU leaders also urged immediate closure of the Atomic Minerals Directorate office in Shillong and raised allegations that influential buyers are acquiring land in Domiasiat and nearby uranium belts.
- Meghalaya holds large uranium deposits concentrated in Domiasiat, Wahkaji and Mawthabah, and the state’s action follows decades of local protests over environmental and health risks and could prompt legal fights over land and central rulemaking.
