Meghalaya Deploys SF-10 Commandos and Police to Protect Lapangap Farmers

Stalled border talks have left a long-term fix on hold.

Overview

  • The Meghalaya Police, which sent an SF-10 commando platoon Thursday morning, now has at least three platoons in Lapangap and will adjust numbers as conditions change, the DGP said.
  • Farmers and student groups who marched in Shillong on Wednesday were stopped by police, and pepper spray and batons left several protesters needing care.
  • Village leaders say groups from Assam’s Karbi Anglong uproot saplings at night, which has scared farmers from tending fields at the start of the sowing season.
  • Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar told the delegation the state will secure fields so cultivation can continue, and district officials from both sides will keep talking.
  • Security posts reflect a status-quo deal in the disputed belt, with an Assam Police camp near Lapangap and Meghalaya’s new Barato outpost roughly 16–19 km away.
