Meghalaya Court Remands Nongrah Child Murder Suspect to 8 Days' Police Custody
The order follows a six-month probe that police say yielded a confession backed by forensic findings.
Overview
- A local court remanded Kennedy Khongsit, 32, to police custody for eight days Thursday, moving the Nongrah child murder case into the custodial stage of the investigation.
- Police said Khongsit confessed during questioning that he smothered the seven-year-old after the boy refused to fetch a brush and a bucket while he cleaned a water tank.
- According to the police account, he hid the body in the tank, later put it in a sack, carried it on a relative’s scooter, and dumped it by a Mawpat roadside between 4:15 pm and 4:50 pm.
- A post-mortem at NEIGRIHMS found death by asphyxia due to smothering, and investigators said they sent exhibits to CFSL Guwahati and FSL Shillong during the six-month Special Investigation Team probe.
- The child went missing from Lum Marboh, Nongrah, on October 8, 2025, and was found the next morning at Matngen/Mawtngen, Mawpat, while relatives and local women’s groups now seek tough action as police pursue further interrogation.
