Measles Outbreaks Widen: Colorado School Cluster Grows as California Probes Mass Exposure

Health agencies are escalating exposure alerts alongside vaccination outreach after the CDC counted 1,281 U.S. cases this year.

Overview

  • Colorado confirmed four additional measles cases tied to Broomfield High School and Broomfield Heights Middle School, bringing the outbreak there to seven and prompting exposure notices that include Denver International Airport on Feb. 16.
  • State officials in Colorado said all newly identified patients are unvaccinated and directed about 80 unvaccinated students, staff and volunteers to stay away from the two schools for 21 days.
  • Utah reported 358 cases since last year with more than 120 emergency visits, 31 hospitalizations and three ICU admissions, and the state lowered MMR eligibility to children 6 months and older.
  • In the Sacramento region, health departments reported six cases and are contacting families after a contagious child at a Feb. 24 educational program may have exposed more than 100 children; Kaiser Roseville is assisting with notifications.
  • Arizona’s outbreak reached 261 cases since August, concentrated around Mohave County, with roughly 97% of patients unvaccinated, as officials reiterate guidance for MMR within 72 hours of exposure or immunoglobulin within six days and 21 days of symptom monitoring.
