Measles Outbreak in Bangladesh Surpasses 600 Deaths as Cases Surge

Low two-dose vaccine coverage risks prolonging transmission.

Overview

  • Since mid-March the outbreak has produced about 74,572 suspected infections and 9,191 laboratory-confirmed cases, with the death toll reported at 601 by the Directorate General of Health Services.
  • Officials say 511 deaths are classed as suspected measles and 90 are laboratory-confirmed, and 1,210 new suspected cases were recorded in the most recent 24‑hour report.
  • Health services have admitted roughly 60,158 suspected patients since March 15 and discharged about 55,942, putting sustained pressure on paediatric wards in Dhaka and other districts.
  • Authorities, the UN and NGOs have run emergency vaccination campaigns and set up temporary treatment capacity including a field hospital at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, but coverage gaps mean herd immunity is far from the roughly 95% needed to stop spread.
  • Malnourished children and communities with limited access to routine immunisation and vitamin A supplementation are suffering higher complication and death rates, raising the risk of further local spread and prolonged strain on hospitals.
