MDL Lays Keels for Second and Third Next-Generation Indian Coast Guard OPVs

The vessels advance India’s push for indigenous shipbuilding under a Rs 1,614.89 crore program.

Overview

  • The keel-laying for Yard 16402 and 16403 took place on 17 March 2026 at YMPL, Ratnagiri, presided over by IG Sudhir Sahni in the presence of ICG, MDL and classification officials.
  • The six-ship project was contracted on 20 December 2023 under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders as designer and builder.
  • MDL scheduled delivery of Yard 16402 for December 2027 and Yard 16403 for May 2028.
  • Each 117‑metre vessel will have a 5,000‑nautical‑mile range and 23‑knot top speed, use twin controllable‑pitch propellers driven by 9,000 kW engines, and carry dual ABS and IRS classification as High Speed Craft.
  • The ships are intended for coastal and offshore patrolling, fisheries protection, anti-smuggling and anti-piracy, search and rescue, ocean surveillance and SLOC monitoring, with systems including AI-based predictive maintenance, remote piloted drones, an Integrated Bridge System and an Integrated Platform Management System.
