- MCC announced on June 18, 2026 that it will stage the world premiere of a What’s Eating Gilbert Grape musical Off‑Broadway in June 2027 at the Newman Mills Theater.
- Peter Hedges will write the book adapting his 1991 novel, with music and lyrics by Adrian Enscoe, Christopher Sears, Sydney Shepherd, and Regina Strayhorn.
- Anne Kauffman will direct the production, which is being produced in association with Matt Ross, Dede Harris, and Linda Rubin.
- MCC made the musical part of its 40th anniversary season, which also includes Anne Washburn’s Anon with previews Sept. 25, 2026 and an October 13 opening, plus Lloyd Suh’s The Heart Sellers in January 2027.
