MBTA to Close Symphony Station for 35-Month Accessibility Overhaul Starting June 6

The closure tackles a long-lacking step-free path at the 85-year-old stop through a full rebuild.

Overview

  • MBTA officials, who announced the plan Wednesday, will shut Symphony Station on June 6 as Green Line E trains bypass the stop for 35 months.
  • Work will add four elevators, raised boarding platforms, accessible restrooms, brighter lighting, improved wayfinding, and new safety features.
  • Riders are directed to Northeastern University or Prudential on the Green Line about 0.3 miles away, the Orange Line at Massachusetts Avenue 0.1 miles away, or the Route 39 bus.
  • The renovation stems from an August 2019 contract budgeted at $150.8 million plus roughly $20 million for utility relocation, with $66.6 million in federal funds now secured.
  • A public meeting on the project is set for May 18 at Symphony Towers, and a prior letter from an assistant attorney general criticized a Foxboro funding amendment without seeking an injunction.
