Mazda Unveils Vision X-Coupe and X-Compact Concepts at Japan Mobility Show

Mazda ties the showcase to a near-term race test of its removable-cartridge exhaust CO2 capture, signaling real-world evaluation of its algae-fuel hybrid concept.

Overview

  • The Vision X-Coupe pairs a two-rotor Wankel plug-in hybrid with an electric motor and battery for about 510 PS (375 kW), claiming roughly 160 km electric range and up to about 800 km combined.
  • Mazda says the coupe can run on microalgae-derived fuel rated by the company as roughly 90% climate neutral and features “Mazda Mobile Carbon Capture” that stores filtered exhaust CO2 in swappable cartridges.
  • The manufacturer plans the first operational trial of the carbon-capture system next month in endurance racing with the Mazda 55.
  • The Vision X-Compact presents a small-car design study with Kodo-evolved styling and an empathic AI using a Human Body Sensing Model, though Mazda has released few technical specifics.
  • Given the Mazda2’s exit from Europe in late 2024 and production ending in late 2025, outlets report the X-Compact could preview a successor, but Mazda has not confirmed any production intent.
