Mazda Launches China‑Built 6e in Australia with Aggressive Pricing

Competitive pricing aims to boost EV sales to lower Mazda's exposure to fleet emissions penalties.

Overview

  • Mazda announced the 6e on Monday and said showroom deliveries in Australia will begin in July, with local pricing from $49,990 for the GT and $52,990 for the Atenza before on‑road costs.
  • The brand has recorded 715 Australian pre-orders, split 453 Atenza and 262 GT, and expects initial monthly demand of about 250–300 cars with the ability to scale production if demand grows.
  • The 6e is built at Changan Mazda’s Nanjing plant on Changan’s EPA1 electric architecture as part of a 50:50 joint venture, and Mazda says it changed nearly all exterior panels to preserve brand identity.
  • Mazda has deployed 50 Japanese quality inspectors at the Nanjing factory and publicly says build standards will meet or exceed its Japanese plants to reassure buyers of China‑built cars.
  • Early road tests of the UK specification report a single 78 kWh LFP battery, 258 ps output, about 348 miles WLTP range, 0–62 mph in 7.3 seconds and 10–80% charging on a 200 kW DC charger in 24 minutes.
