Max Weinberg Surprises King Gizzard on Stage at Forest Hills

The short-notice fill-in highlighted the band’s use of guest musicians and its appetite for long improvisational jams during an intense tour and release period.

Overview

  • Max Weinberg, the E Street Band drummer and father of Jay Weinberg, joined King Gizzard as a second drummer on Friday, Aug. 21, for the song “Hot Water.”
  • The group stretched the performance into an extended roughly 12-minute jam with regular drummer Michael “Cavs” Cavanagh switching to bongos near the end of the song.
  • Guitarist Joey Walker told the crowd that Jay Weinberg was unavailable because he was in Nashville and that Jay called his father, who drove from Atlantic City to play the set.
  • The cameo came during the second night of a three-show Forest Hills Stadium run that marked the band’s fourth straight year at the venue and preceded a rave-focused Brooklyn date and more tour dates in Australia.
  • The appearance continues a pattern of surprise guest spots that began when Jay first sat in with the band in 2024 and comes as King Gizzard promotes a high-output phase that includes their recently released album Alien Metal.
