- Athletics Ireland confirmed on Friday that Sharlene Mawdsley has withdrawn from next week's European Athletics Championships in Birmingham because of a diagnosed tear to her hamstring.
- Mawdsley pulled up during the 200m at the national championships in Santry in late July and was later diagnosed with the hamstring tear that prevented a timely recovery.
- She had been selected for the individual 400m and the women's 4x400m relay after a breakthrough season that included four 400m personal bests and a European ranking inside the top six.
- The relay squad also lost Rachel McCann to injury after the national 400m, leaving Sophie Becker as Ireland's only entrant in the individual 400m and reducing Ireland’s relay options.
- Mawdsley thanked her coaches, medical staff and training partner in a statement, described her outlook as 'Down, not out,' and said she will continue rehab with the aim of returning later this season.
