Overview
- A large 48–49 inch potable pipeline on Calzada Ermita Iztapalapa at Emiliano Zapata ruptured over the weekend, releasing thousands of liters and flooding streets, homes and businesses with water up to about half a meter in some properties.
- Emergency teams from SEGIAGUA, Iztapalapa municipal brigades and Protección Civil deployed dozens of workers and specialized equipment to close valves, pump out water and set up a command post for relief and cleanup.
- SEGIAGUA moved from emergency pumping to targeted repairs using a silleta to cover the damaged section, hydropneumatic units and localized valve shutdowns, and crews say the leak is now contained though some nearby neighborhoods still have low pressure.
- Authorities began a census of roughly affected homes and businesses, provided cleaning kits, food and psychological support, transported an elderly resident to hospital, and have engaged insurers to verify property damage.
- The failure has renewed scrutiny of Mexico City's hydraulic network as SEGIAGUA continues planned maintenance across the capital that is causing separate low-pressure zones and offering free pipa deliveries through Línea H2O.
