Overview
- Trainor, 30, died after a Jeep traveling south in Route 1’s northbound lanes struck his cruiser near the Saugus–Lynnfield line early Wednesday, and the driver, identified as Hernan Marrero, 50, of Roslindale, died at the scene.
- His shift had been set to end at 2 a.m., a 911 call reporting a wrong-way driver came in at 2:01 a.m., and he was still nearby when he responded, according to State Police Col. Geoffrey Noble.
- Detectives from the Essex County District Attorney’s Office are reviewing surveillance video to pinpoint where Marrero entered the highway, and an autopsy will help determine whether impairment played a role.
- A nonprofit known as the Hundred Club of Massachusetts is providing immediate and long-term support to Trainor’s mother, fiancée, and siblings, with the Greg Hill Foundation also raising funds for the family.
- Retired and current officials are urging wider use of wrong-way alerts, and MassDOT has installed 16 TAPCO systems with flashing LED signs and cameras and recorded 205 wrong-way drivers between November 2022 and January 2025.
