Overview
- Federal prosecutors charged Yupeng Sun with one count each of fraudulent voter registration and fraudulent voting after his arrest this week, and charging documents say he admitted in a July interview that he used the other man’s name to register and cast a ballot.
- Prosecutors allege Sun submitted an online voter registration on Oct. 10, 2024 and later cast an early voting ballot at Malden City Hall on Oct. 31, 2024 in the victim’s name.
- The complaint says Sun also filed two fraudulent immigration forms in the names of the alleged victim and his wife in April 2024, which led to their green cards being seized during a June 2024 secondary inspection and the start of removal proceedings.
- An immigration judge restored the couple’s lawful permanent resident status in January 2026 after finding their testimony credible and relying on forensic evidence that they had not signed the fraudulent forms.
- Homeland Security Investigations and the U.S. Attorney’s Office brought the federal case with help from Lexington and Andover police; if convicted Sun faces up to five years in prison, large fines for each count, and possible deportation after any sentence.
