Mass Shootings During July Fourth Weekend Leave Children and Officers Wounded in New York and Chicago

Officials say the cluster of attacks has prompted urgent criminal probes into motives, possible gang ties and officer-involved uses of force.

Overview

  • In Coney Island, a man in black fired over a fence into a courtyard during a July 4 family barbecue, wounding eight people including four boys ages 6, 7, 12 and 14 and leaving a 21-year-old woman in critical condition.
  • Police recovered a TEC-9–style firearm with an extended magazine and at least 10 shell casings at the Coney Island scene but have not made any arrests as investigators examine whether the attack connects to a gang-related homicide on the same block.
  • Early on July 5, an NYPD detective was shot in Crown Heights when officers confronted an armed 18-year-old; the suspect was taken into custody after a foot pursuit, and a handgun was recovered.
  • In Chicago, two officers were shot during a South Shore traffic stop and the suspect was hospitalized after being shot by police, and separate West Side shootings left six to seven people—mostly teenagers—with one 17-year-old girl in critical condition as CPD and COPA investigate.
  • City leaders and police officials have vowed aggressive investigations and the incidents sharpen questions about juvenile access to guns, public-safety planning for large gatherings and oversight of officer-involved shootings.
