Mass Russian Missile and Drone Strike Hits Kyiv; Ballistic Warheads Penetrate Defences

The partial failure to stop ballistic strikes has left civilians dead, damaged city infrastructure and triggered urgent calls for NATO to supply interceptor missiles before the Ankara summit.

Overview

  • Ukrainian officials say a combined Russian barrage overnight on July 5–6 involved about 68 missiles and roughly 351 strike drones aimed mainly at Kyiv and surrounding areas.
  • Authorities report roughly two dozen civilians killed and scores injured across Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast, with damage recorded at more than 20 sites in the capital and severe destruction and large evacuations in Vyshneve.
  • Ukraine’s air defences shot down many cruise missiles and hundreds of drones, reporting the interception of 37 rockets and 326 drones, while commanders say none of the incoming ballistic missiles were intercepted and several struck targets.
  • Emergency teams completed primary search operations in Kyiv’s Podil and Darnytskyi districts and continue recovery, demolition of unsafe structures and power restoration after outages across six oblasts and parts of Crimea.
  • Ukrainian leaders and diaspora groups have pressed NATO and its members for immediate delivery of interceptor missiles and air‑defence systems, a demand that has intensified diplomatic focus ahead of the leaders’ summit in Ankara.
