Masemola Admits Vetting Gaps as Raids Hit Sibiya and Minister’s Aide in SAPS Interference Probes

He told Parliament he alerted the president to an order to shut the Political Killings Task Team.

Overview

  • National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola, on his second day before Parliament’s ad hoc committee, acknowledged SAPS vetting shortfalls and said the SIU has been asked to conduct independent vetting.
  • Masemola testified he reported Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s directive to disband the Political Killings Task Team to President Cyril Ramaphosa, and said the team was not actually closed.
  • Police conducted a search-and-seizure at suspended deputy commissioner Shadrack Sibiya’s Centurion home, taking phones and a laptop; Sibiya called it intimidation ahead of his Monday testimony and no arrest was reported.
  • Cedrick Nkabinde, Mchunu’s chief of staff, alleged a masked unit assaulted his brother during a search for electronic devices and claimed officers said they were sent by Masemola; Masemola told MPs he was informed of the operation.
  • MPs pressed Masemola on whistleblower protection and other high-profile cases as the parliamentary inquiry and the Madlanga Commission continue to probe alleged interference, docket transfers from the PKTT, and links to businessman Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala.
