Masdar and Luxcara Sign MoU to Explore More Than €5 Billion for German Battery Storage and Offshore Wind

The non-binding deal signals possible large-scale international capital for Germany’s energy transition pending due diligence and regulatory approvals.

Overview

  • Masdar and Luxcara signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding on 11 September to explore joint investments of more than €5 billion in battery energy storage systems (BESS) and offshore wind starting in Germany.
  • The MoU is exploratory and requires due diligence, negotiation of definitive agreements, financing arrangements and customary regulatory approvals before any projects or capital commitments are finalised.
  • Masdar brings a global development platform and an operating portfolio above 65 GW, including a UAE 5.2 GW solar programme paired with 19 GWh of batteries and an earlier February 2026 JV with RWE targeting German BESS.
  • Luxcara contributes on-the-ground German experience from a 520 MW/1,040 MWh BESS acquisition near Dortmund and its role in the larger Waltrop battery park project that has recently secured key infrastructure approvals.
  • If realised, the partnership could speed deployment of utility-scale storage and offshore wind that strengthen grid flexibility and energy security in Germany and may attract more international capital into European renewables markets.
