Overview
- Three Baltimore Police detectives followed Dwight Hawkins from a Belair Road liquor store on Feb. 24 and chased him as he ran from the scene.
- Investigators say Hawkins ignored commands, produced a handgun near Detective Arthur Fuog, and was shot by Fuog and Detective Omar Rodriguez; a handgun was recovered at the scene.
- On June 11 the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division announced it would not bring criminal charges, concluding the officers did not violate Maryland law.
- The two detectives were identified as six- and seven-year members of the Group Violence Unit who rendered medical aid before Hawkins was taken to a hospital and later died.
- Hawkins’ relatives have released neighborhood security footage and dispute the IID finding, keeping community concern and calls for police accountability alive.
