Maryland Will Not Charge Detectives in Fatal Baltimore Shooting

The Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division found the Feb. 24 shooting of Dwight Hawkins legally justified, leaving his family to dispute the ruling publicly.

Overview

  • Three Baltimore Police detectives followed Dwight Hawkins from a Belair Road liquor store on Feb. 24 and chased him as he ran from the scene.
  • Investigators say Hawkins ignored commands, produced a handgun near Detective Arthur Fuog, and was shot by Fuog and Detective Omar Rodriguez; a handgun was recovered at the scene.
  • On June 11 the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division announced it would not bring criminal charges, concluding the officers did not violate Maryland law.
  • The two detectives were identified as six- and seven-year members of the Group Violence Unit who rendered medical aid before Hawkins was taken to a hospital and later died.
  • Hawkins’ relatives have released neighborhood security footage and dispute the IID finding, keeping community concern and calls for police accountability alive.
