Maryland Reaches Settlement in Principle With Dali Ship Owner and Operator in Key Bridge Collapse

The agreement marks a step toward funding repairs, with a separate court fight over liability limits pending.

Overview

  • Maryland officials said Thursday that Grace Ocean and Synergy Marine agreed to a settlement in principle that resolves part of the state’s claims, with terms still confidential while the deal is finalized.
  • The state said its potential claims against the ship’s builder, Hyundai, remain open and are not covered by this agreement.
  • ACE American Insurance Company, which paid Maryland $350 million after the collapse, reached a separate deal earlier in April to recover that payout from the ship’s owner and operator.
  • A June 1 federal proceeding before Judge James K. Bredar will test the companies’ bid to cap total liability at about $44 million under maritime law, which can limit payouts to a vessel’s post‑accident value.
  • The March 2024 power loss that sent the Dali into the Key Bridge killed six workers and halted port traffic for nearly three months, and the rebuild is projected to cost $4.3–$5.2 billion with a target to reopen by late 2030.
