Maryland Probe Opened After Bel Air Traffic Stop Ends With Man Shot and Later Dead

The state Independent Investigations Division is leading an independent inquiry and asking the public for witness accounts and video to clarify the officer’s use of force.

Overview

  • Police say a traffic stop on Franklin Street escalated into a physical altercation during which a Bel Air officer fired his department-issued gun and struck a man who was flown to Shock Trauma and later died.
  • The officer was hurt in the confrontation, received hospital treatment and was released, and authorities report no other injuries and no ongoing threat to the community.
  • The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General has opened a separate probe to establish facts about the shooting and will collect evidence independent of the local department.
  • The Bel Air Police Department says it is fully cooperating with the IID, which is asking anyone with information or cell phone or private surveillance video to call 410-576-7070 or email IID@oag.maryland.gov.
  • The IID investigation could lead to findings that inform possible criminal charges or policy review, and investigators are withholding the victim’s identity pending next-of-kin notification and further investigative steps.
