Maruti Suzuki to Add EV-Only Production Line at Gujarat Plant by July
The move is meant to relieve bottlenecks from mixed ICE–EV assembly.
Overview
- Maruti will commission the dedicated “Production D” line at Hansalpur with roughly 2.5 lakh annual capacity, lifting the site’s output from about 7.5 lakh to nearly 10 lakh units.
- The EV-only line will build the Maruti eVitara, Toyota’s Urban Cruiser Ebella, and future models from the Maruti–Toyota partnership.
- EVs currently share an assembly line with high-demand ICE models such as the Fronx, a setup the company says has caused scheduling conflicts and longer waiting periods.
- Maruti officials expect production to run smoother after July when the new line starts operations.
- Strong demand continues to strain supply, with January wholesales at 2,36,962 (a record), bookings up about 25% year-on-year, pending orders around 1.75 lakh, and dealer stock in transit at roughly 6–7 days; a separate Khoraj plant is in development to add about 10 lakh units annually in the longer term.
