Overview
- The Marlins reinstated outfielder Griffin Conine from the 60-day injured list and designated infielder Christopher Morel for assignment on Sunday to open a spot on both the 26- and 40-man rosters.
- Morel began the season on the injured list after a left oblique strain before Opening Day and managed only a .162/.219/.206 line with three extra-base hits and a 38.4% strikeout rate in 73 plate appearances for Miami.
- Because Morel has more than three years of MLB service time and a one-year, $2 million contract, any team that claims him would assume roughly $1 million of the remaining salary and he can reject an outright and elect free agency if he clears waivers.
- Manager Clayton McCullough praised Morel's professionalism and said the move was made so the player can pursue a better opportunity, noting Morel’s playing time had shrunk behind contributors like Heriberto Hernández, Esteury Ruiz and Kyle Stowers.
- Morel’s DFA closes a short reclamation bid after Tampa Bay non-tendered him last fall and follows a career downturn since his 2023 power year; his full-clearance, claim or outright outcome will determine whether Miami retains salary obligations or the player departs.
