MarinersBryce Miller Set to Begin Rehab at Triple-A Tacoma

His return could create a rare surplus in Seattle’s rotation.

Overview

  • Bryce Miller, who has been on the injured list with a left oblique strain, is slated to start his rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday, according to GM Justin Hollander.
  • The right-hander has not pitched in a game since he exited his Feb. 26 Cactus League start, and the club cleared him after a week to 10 days without any post-throwing soreness.
  • The plan follows a Spring Training-style build on a six-day schedule that starts at two innings or 30 pitches and ramps to roughly 80–90 pitches over about five outings, using the full 30-day rehab window for pitchers.
  • Emerson Hancock has held Miller’s rotation spot with a 2.28 ERA over four starts and sharp strikeout and walk rates, and Hollander said the team will decide on roles when Miller is ready.
  • Miller has been working on a cutter and a new slider grip he learned from Houston’s Bryan Abreu, and his fastball has reached 98–99 mph in recent bullpens.
