Marine Detained After TSA Finds Live 25mm Round in Checked Bag at Palm Springs Airport

Prosecutors will review a possible destructive-device charge following safe offsite detonation by bomb technicians.

Overview

  • TSA officers at Palm Springs International Airport screening checked luggage Monday found a corroded 25mm round that police later confirmed was live.
  • Riverside County bomb technicians used X-ray imaging to identify the round as live, removed it from the terminal, and detonated it in a desert area off Gene Autry Trail south of I-10.
  • No one was hurt, and investigators said the traveler, identified as Marine Ryan Weaver, 30, of Henderson, Texas, told them he had found the item about a year ago and thought it was inert.
  • Palm Springs police referred the case to the Riverside County district attorney for review of a possible violation of California Penal Code 18710, which covers possession of a destructive device.
  • Weaver was released to military authorities and could face Marine Corps discipline and a TSA civil penalty, a process the agency uses to fine travelers who bring prohibited items to airports.
