Marine Alert in Effect for Anomalous Waves on Peru’s North and Central Coasts Through Feb. 10

Full-moon–enhanced swells from the north have port captains reviewing real-time restrictions to protect coastal users.

Overview

  • Peru’s Naval Hydrography Directorate issued Special Notice No. 03-26 after monitoring showed light-to-moderate anomalous waves forecast from Feb. 6 to 10.
  • The affected stretch runs from Tumbes to San Juan de Marcona, while the south coast remains under normal sea conditions.
  • Conditions strengthened first on the north coast the night of Feb. 6, with the central coast increasing from Feb. 7, according to official tracking.
  • Shifts in Pacific anticyclones are generating long-travel wave trains, with the current full moon phase amplifying water levels and wave impacts.
  • Port captaincies and the coast guard are monitoring continuously, may impose temporary limits on port, fishing or beach activities, and expect progressive normalization after Feb. 10.
