Marin County Moves to Drop Federal Jail Reimbursement Tied to Immigrant Data

The budget proposal omits SCAAP revenue after months of protests, with officials promising to replace the funds.

Overview

  • County Executive Derek Johnson told supervisors he will present a budget that excludes State Criminal Alien Assistance Program funding.
  • Activists filled the meeting and delivered a petition with more than 5,900 signatures urging an end to cooperation with ICE.
  • Marin received $461,446 in FY2022, $416,677 in FY2023 and $338,136 in FY2024 under SCAAP, which requires submitting inmate identifiers and incarceration dates.
  • Sheriff Jamie Scardina said he was consulted, described SCAAP as a DOJ program not tied to immigration enforcement, and said jail release information will continue to be posted online.
  • County leaders said they will make the sheriff’s budget whole and maintain immigrant-support funding, as some neighboring jurisdictions such as Santa Cruz have withdrawn from SCAAP.
