MapQuest Tops U.S. App Store After Refusing to Rename Lake Ontario

The download surge is testing MapQuest's ability to convert politically driven installs into a stable user base.

Overview

  • A presidential executive order on August 27 directed U.S. naming authorities to relabel Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” and MapQuest publicly declined to adopt the change.
  • Google Maps and Apple Maps updated their platforms to match the official guidance while MapQuest announced on X that it would keep the lake’s traditional name.
  • The refusal triggered a consumer-driven surge that pushed MapQuest from outside the top 100 to the No. 1 overall spot on the U.S. App Store in early September.
  • Install estimates diverge: Sensor Tower reports roughly 632,000 U.S. downloads in the period after the order while MapQuest says it recorded about 1.5 million installs across the U.S. and Canada.
  • MapQuest’s small team is racing to add features and fixes, including fast-tracked Android Auto support, as the company owned by System1 tries to turn the wave of politically charged downloads into sustained usage.
