Manipur Raids Nab Insurgent Cadres, Seize Heroin and Mortars

Police frame the crackdown as proof of insurgent links to drugs plus weapons.

Overview

  • Security forces across Manipur detained cadres from RPF/PLA, KCP, KYKL and UNLF(P) on Friday, with arrests near the Myanmar border at Moreh and in parts of Imphal.
  • Earlier on Thursday, police operations also caught an RPF/PLA member in Imphal East and recovered about 1.7 kg of suspected Heroin No. 4 from two suspects stopped in the Meitram–Nambol area.
  • Forest searches in Tuinomjang and Sanasabi in Imphal East uncovered small arms, a bulletproof jacket, a walkie-talkie, ammunition and a 51 mm mortar high-explosive bomb.
  • Investigators said a UNLF(P) cadre held in Imphal is named in a 2022 FIR over a bomb blast in Sagolband Takhellambam Leikai.
  • A separate sweep in Patsoi in Imphal West turned up locally made guns, pistols with magazines, a two-inch mortar, anti-riot cartridges, 7.62 mm rounds and protective gear, with police saying follow-up probes are underway.
