Manipur Forces Raze 23 Illegal Bunkers, Seize 18 IEDs in Separate Raids

Police say the operations aim to disarm fighters to steady tense hill districts.

Overview

  • Security forces razed 23 illegal bunkers Thursday across Mongkot Chepu, Shongphel, Mullam, Sirarakhong and Ringue in Ukhrul’s Litan police area.
  • A separate sweep in T Bongmol village in the Moreh police area of Tengnoupal recovered two single-barrel rifles, four 9mm pistols with magazines and 18 IEDs, which bomb teams destroyed on site Wednesday.
  • Police said they also seized a 12-bore pump action gun, 17 cartridges of different calibres and 111 spent cases during the Ukhrul operation.
  • The raids follow clashes since February between Tangkhul Naga and Kuki groups in Ukhrul, with at least seven people shot dead and more than 30 homes burned, according to media reports.
  • In Tengnoupal, a 12-hour shutdown called by Kuki-Zo groups over an arrest disrupted daily life, highlighting that local tensions persist even as forces remove weapons and fortifications.
