Manipur Editor Shot at and Assaulted in Imphal as Police Open Probe

The attack renews concern following earlier threats, including the 2024 withdrawal of his government security.

Overview

  • Khoirom Loyalakpa, editor-in-chief of the vernacular daily Naharolgi Thoudang, was targeted late Wednesday night while returning home.
  • The attack occurred around 10 pm near Hatta War cemetery in Imphal East under the jurisdiction of Porompat police station.
  • A trailing car blocked his vehicle before assailants fired two shots at the left window, overpowered him, and beat him, injuring his teeth and face.
  • Police recovered two empty .32 calibre bullet casings and registered a complaint at Porompat station, with no arrests or identified motive reported so far.
  • Journalist bodies including the All Manipur Working Journalist Union and the Editors’ Guild of Manipur condemned the assault, noting he previously faced a July 2024 shooting at his home and had state security withdrawn that year.
