Manhunt Underway After Kansas City Interstate Shootings Leave One Dead

A multijurisdictional search is under way to capture a suspect authorities describe as armed and dangerous with an FBI reward of up to $25,000.

Overview

  • Police say five shootings happened in rapid succession on Tuesday between about 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. along a roughly five-mile corridor that included I-670, I-70 and Truman Road.
  • Four people were wounded and one man later died after a vehicle crashed and medics found a probable gunshot; surviving victims include an Uber driver taking Argentina fans whose leg wound was not life-threatening.
  • Authorities have identified 22-year-old Oscar Sanchez-Munoz as the person of interest and describe him as armed and dangerous while urging the public to call 911 or the tips hotline with information.
  • Officers tracked the suspect to a home in Independence, where standoffs occurred and a fire damaged the house, but Sanchez-Munoz was not found when police entered the property the next morning.
  • The FBI has offered a reward of up to $25,000 and local, state and federal agencies are coordinating the search; the incidents have raised renewed public concern about safety around World Cup events even though police say the shootings are not believed to be tournament-related.
