Manhunt for Michael Angok After Escape From Sydney Hospital

The case is intensifying questions about how detainees are guarded during medical transfers outside secure facilities.

Overview

  • Michael Angok, 30, fled custody at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital on Wednesday morning after a transfer from Villawood Immigration Detention Centre and remains at large.
  • NSW Police have deployed the Raptor Squad, PolAir, the Dog Unit and the Operations Support Group to search, and officers found some of his belongings on Gallipoli Road in Condell Park.
  • Police urged people not to approach him and to call Triple Zero (000) or Crime Stoppers with information.
  • He is of African appearance, 175 to 180 centimetres tall with a thin build and short black hair, and was last seen in a black hoodie, grey track pants and white Crocs; police say he previously lived in Blacktown and may use public transport.
  • Angok was convicted over the 2014 gang rape of a 14-year-old in Doonside, released from prison in 2017 and has since been held in immigration detention awaiting deportation, a system under renewed political scrutiny after the 2023 High Court ruling against indefinite detention.
