Manchester Airport Trial: Defendant Denies ‘High Rage’ in Police Clash

Jurors are weighing self-defence claims using body-camera footage alongside medical reports on officers’ injuries.

Overview

  • Prosecutors on Friday pressed Mohammed Fahir Amaaz on claims he was in a “high rage.” He denied that and said every blow he threw was lawful self-defence. He has said he believed the officer intended to murder him.
  • Amaaz, 21, and his brother Muhammad Amaad, 26, are on trial accused of assaulting firearms officer PC Zachary Marsden. They deny assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
  • Jurors watched body-camera and CCTV footage that shows PC Marsden kick Amaaz in the face and bring his foot down near his head as colleagues moved to arrest him.
  • The court heard medical evidence that PC Marsden had post-concussion symptoms. PC Lydia Ward’s nose was broken and PC Ellie Cook had minor injuries.
  • Jurors were told Amaaz was previously convicted of assaulting the Starbucks customer and the two female officers from the wider incident, though he maintains his innocence.
