Overview
- Karl Hutchings was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 19 years and 254 days at Cambridge Crown Court on Thursday for the murder of 55-year-old Julie Buckley.
- Prosecutors said Buckley was last seen on CCTV in January 2025 and was likely killed between January 29 and the morning of January 30 before her remains were buried in a shallow grave near Wimblington.
- Forensic work at Hutchings’ home found extensive blood staining, missing carpet and burnt items, while recovery teams later found the remains in 10 pieces and saw blades with the victim’s hair were recovered.
- Hutchings initially denied the offence, changed his plea to guilty in September 2025 after psychiatric evidence did not support diminished responsibility, and supplied police with a map that led to the burial site.
- Both victim and defendant had histories of class-A drug use and the court accepted mitigation about Hutchings’ mental-health problems while rejecting it as sufficient to reduce his culpability, a case built on CCTV, phone and bank records and expert testimony.
