Overview
- A 39-year-old man, later named by Gardaí as Mark Cullen, was shot in the leg and died at Patrician Park, Kill Avenue at about 8:30am on Sunday 5 July 2026.
- Gardaí have preserved the scene, closed nearby roads, set up an incident room at Dún Laoghaire station, appointed a Senior Investigating Officer and scheduled a post-mortem to establish bullet trajectory and exact cause of death.
- Detectives are exploring several lines of inquiry including that Cullen attended a prearranged meeting and was fatally wounded during a struggle or in a suspected punishment shooting, but no definitive motive has been established.
- Investigators are appealing for witnesses and for dashcam or CCTV footage from road users near Kill Avenue between 8:00am and 9:00am on 5 July while forensic examinations are carried out.
- Garda sources say Cullen had prior convictions and links to a south Dublin street gang but was not regarded as a major criminal, and the case is being treated as the first gang-related murder this year and the first organised-crime firearm fatality since 2024.
