Man Shot by Oshkosh Officer at Fleet Farm Dies

The state justice division is leading an independent review of the use of force.

Overview

  • Police said an officer confronted a man with a handgun at the Fleet Farm on Washburn Street Sunday around 8 a.m. after calls to 911.
  • Officials confirmed later Sunday that the man died after being taken to a local hospital.
  • Investigators said the man ignored commands and moved toward the officer while pulling a gun from his waist before the officer fired.
  • Police reported no injuries to officers or bystanders, recovered a firearm at the scene, and said they do not believe other suspects were involved.
  • The Wisconsin DOJ’s Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the probe, which is standard in the state, and the officer is on paid leave as police ask witnesses to contact DCI or Winnebago County Crime Stoppers.
