Man Remanded Over Fatal Wrong-Way A19 Crash in Sunderland

The police watchdog has opened an independent investigation into the pursuit that preceded the collision.

  • Police say a white BMW M135 failed to stop on the A184, was pursued, then travelled south on the A19’s northbound carriageway and struck a grey Volkswagen Sharan around 3am on March 1.
  • A woman in her 20s who was a passenger in the BMW died at the scene, a male passenger remains in a life-threatening condition, and the Volkswagen driver suffered injuries not thought to be serious.
  • Northumbria Police referred the case to the IOPC, and investigators are seeking dashcam or CCTV footage quoting reference NP-20260301-0122.
