Man Killed by Automatic-Style Gunfire at Ford City Mall Sideshow

City attorneys have moved to close the deteriorating mall and officials warn a vacant property could draw more illegal gatherings and violence.

Overview

  • The shooting occurred during a large, informal sideshow in the Ford City Mall parking lot, which videos and police reports show erupted with gunfire early Saturday around 2:50 a.m.
  • The victim was identified as 21-year-old Martin Isaac Cantu Murillo of South Bend, Indiana; he was struck in the head, taken to Christ Hospital, and later pronounced dead.
  • Responding officers recovered about 25 shell casings at the scene and social-media footage shows a hooded person firing rapid bursts consistent with an automatic weapon or a semiautomatic pistol fitted with an illegal conversion device.
  • The shooter fled in a red SUV and no arrests have been announced as Chicago police continue an active investigation using the video and physical evidence.
  • City attorneys filed an emergency motion that will close the mall’s main building on June 22, and Ald. Derrick G. Curtis and other officials say the property must find responsible ownership and security to prevent more unsanctioned, dangerous gatherings.
