Man Jailed for Sex Assaults on Crowded Edinburgh Train

Police call it an opportunistic attack on a packed service, urging rail users to report concerns by texting 61016.

Overview

  • Jamie Muir, 33, received a nine‑month prison sentence at Dunfermline Sheriff Court on April 29 and must stay on the sex offenders register for 10 years.
  • He admitted sexually assaulting two women minutes after boarding a train from Inverkeithing to Edinburgh on November 16, using the crush of passengers to hide his actions.
  • One victim confronted him as the train moved off, he apologised and claimed he did not know where he was, and other passengers pressed him to leave at North Queensferry.
  • The women reported the assaults to officers at Edinburgh Waverley, and British Transport Police shared images to other forces to identify and arrest him.
  • Detective Constable Crawford Gillies condemned the behaviour as sickening and urged anyone who feels unsafe on the railway to discreetly text BTP on 61016 so officers can meet the train.
