Overview
- A jury at Hull Crown Court convicted 51-year-old Laurence Worville of attempted murder and Judge John Thackray KC sentenced him to 24 years in prison plus a four-year licence extension.
- The attack, which left the woman with a badly broken leg, a deep head wound and a broken finger and required a 10-day hospital stay, occurred on May 7 last year when Worville drove into her on Chanterlands Avenue and then struck her repeatedly with a baseball bat.
- Prosecutors said Worville tracked down his estranged wife after being released from custody by stealing mail redirection stickers from his former Royal Mail depot to discover her address.
- Members of the public physically restrained Worville at the scene and prosecutors and the judge said their intervention almost certainly saved the victim’s life.
- The court record shows Worville breached an existing restraining order, had prior convictions for assaults on the same woman, offered a minimising motive in court, and the victim has said she feels safer with him jailed while she continues to recover.
