Man in Singapore Jailed 18 Years and Caned for Years-Long Rape of Younger Sister

The High Court said prolonged abuse caused grave psychological harm that warranted a severe sentence.

Overview

  • He received 18 years in prison and 24 strokes of the cane, which Singapore law allows for certain male offenders, after a High Court sentencing on Monday following his guilty plea.
  • The man admitted to rape and aggravated sexual assault, with eight more charges taken into account, for abuse that ran from 2012 to 2019 when the girl was about five to 12.
  • Many assaults happened in the family’s one-room flat when others were asleep or not home, and he sometimes shouted, slapped, pinched, punched, or pushed her when she resisted.
  • The abuse ended in 2019 after a final rape when she was 12, then in March 2022 she told a school counsellor, who alerted police, leading to his arrest two days later and her care at KK Hospital and IMH for suicidal thoughts and self-harm.
  • Prosecutors sought 19 to 21 years as Justice Mavis Chionh cited a seven-year pattern of offending and serious trauma, while recent police data show reports of child sexual assaults by relatives rose to 192 cases in 2025.
