Man Held in Panvel Forest Murder After Charred Body Is Identified

Technical phone tracing plus jewellery matches prompted police to arrest the suspect so investigators can gather forensic and technical evidence.

Overview

  • Villagers found a badly charred human corpse in the Rajmati forest near Chinchavali on April 11 and police initially treated the case as a blind murder because the body was unrecognizable.
  • Investigators identified the victim as 30-year-old Anitadevi (Anita) Bhagwan Rajbhar by matching jewellery and physical features with a missing-person report and circulating details through the CID network.
  • Police linked mobile-call records and CCTV footage to 27-year-old brick supplier Karan Namdev Patil and say he was arrested on Monday, June 8 and remanded to police custody for further probe.
  • Authorities allege Patil killed the woman after a relationship dispute, striking her with an iron rod and burning the body with petrol to destroy evidence, but police said forensic work is ongoing to corroborate those claims.
  • The case is registered under Sections 103(1) and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and police teams continue to develop technical and forensic evidence while the investigation proceeds.
