Man Fatally Stabbed on Escalator at Boston's South Station

Police are reviewing station security footage, interviewing witnesses, and searching for an unidentified male suspect.

Overview

  • A man was found with at least one stab wound on an escalator at the MBTA Red Line platform and was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead following Wednesday evening’s rush.
  • Officials say the preliminary investigation points to an altercation between the victim and another male on the escalator and that no arrest has been made.
  • Boston Police, MBTA Transit Police and the Suffolk County district attorney’s office are leading the homicide probe and are asking anyone with video or information to call the Homicide Unit at 617-343-4470 or Crime Stoppers.
  • MBTA Red Line service at South Station was briefly suspended while the scene was processed and commuters posted photos showing police tape and visible blood on the escalator.
  • The killing follows separate downtown attacks earlier in July and is likely to sharpen public concern about transit safety as investigators work through video and witness accounts to identify the suspect.
