Man Fatally Shot by Highwood Police During Welfare Check

  • Highwood officers responded to a wellbeing check at a home on the 200 block of Morgan Place after a relative reported a highly intoxicated man who had threatened suicide.
  • Police said the man locked himself in a room as paramedics stood by and officers tried for several minutes to get him to accept help.
  • According to investigators, the man said he was armed and asked if officers were wearing vests before coming out and pointing what looked like a handgun.
  • One officer fired and officers then gave aid before paramedics took the man to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
  • The Major Crime Task Force is investigating, the coroner scheduled an autopsy, and officials said the recovered firearm appears to be a replica.
