Man Extradited From Scotland Charged in 2006 Denis Donaldson Murder

The non-jury Special Criminal Court remanded him in custody with a return date of 13 April.

Overview

  • Antoin Duffy appeared in Dublin's Special Criminal Court following Monday's extradition from Scotland, where he was charged over the 2006 killing of Denis Donaldson.
  • He faces a murder count tied to events between 3 and 4 April 2006 at Cloghercor, Doochary, along with charges of possessing a shotgun and ammunition with intent to endanger life.
  • Prosecutors also charged him with the attempted murder of Liam Copeland McGinley on 19 November 2007 at Meenaboll in Churchill near Glenveagh National Park, plus weapons possession on that date.
  • Detective Garda Adrian Ahern said he arrested Duffy at Casement Aerodrome at 1:22 p.m. after a European Arrest Warrant transfer, with Garda extradition and investigation units and the Irish Air Corps involved.
  • The case is before Ireland's Special Criminal Court, a non-jury tribunal used for terrorism and organized crime cases, and it revisits the 2006 shooting of Donaldson, a former Sinn Féin official who admitted informing for police and MI5, which a dissident group later claimed without a court finding.
