Overview
- Police were called to Tiwi Gardens Retirement Village in Casuarina after reports a man damaged window louvres and assaulted a woman.
- Officers arrested a man nearby without incident and locked him in the rear cage of a police vehicle.
- A short time later they saw he was struggling to breathe, began CPR, and requested St John Ambulance.
- Paramedics took him to Royal Darwin Hospital, where staff declared him dead at 10:10pm.
- Detectives from Major Crime opened an inquiry with Professional Standards oversight for the Coroner, set up crime scenes at the van and arrest site, and said the cause of death and the man’s identity are not yet confirmed.
