Man Detained After Human Remains Found on Quarry Access Road in Málaga

Forensic exams at Málaga's Institute of Legal Medicine will determine identity to establish whether this case increases July's tally of violent deaths.

Overview

  • Partial human remains were discovered on a path that leads to the quarries in Alhaurín de la Torre and a man has been arrested in connection with the finding.
  • Local Guardia Civil officers activated investigative protocols and called in Policía Judicial and the Criminalistics Service (SECRIM) to search the scene for evidence.
  • A judge authorized the removal of the remains and they were transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Málaga for forensic identification and tests.
  • Reports say only part of a body was recovered, which can complicate identification, but forensic work will include DNA sampling, timing of death estimates and attempts to establish cause.
  • Authorities have not confirmed the victim's sex or ruled whether the death was violent; if proved homicidal, the case could become the sixth violent death reported in Málaga this July, following five earlier cases involving women.
