Overview
- Broward Sheriff's Office units, including SWAT, K-9 and the Violent Crimes unit, responded to reports of a man armed with knives who barricaded himself inside an Oakland Park apartment.
- Officers spent hours trying to negotiate a peaceful surrender before the suspect advanced toward deputies with knives and a deputy fired at him, according to BSO.
- The suspect was identified by BSO as 33-year-old Kevin Dominick Almonte, who was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead a short time later.
- Nearby residents were evacuated so officers could sweep the area for alleged threats including claims of firearms, propane tanks and bombs, and they were allowed to return after the scene was cleared.
- The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and BSO Internal Affairs are investigating the deputy-involved shooting, and the deputy who fired has been placed on administrative assignment.
